Legendary Comedy Club Returns with a Star-Studded Celebration Honoring Its Legacy and Welcoming a New Era in Atlantic City
Laff House Comedy Club
The storied Laff House Comedy Club, renowned for kickstarting the careers of comedy legends such as Kevin Hart, Bill Burr, Deon Cole, and Michael Blackson, is set to embark on an exciting new journey in Atlantic City. This beloved comedy venue will reopen at Caesars Pier (formerly known as The Playground), with a grand opening celebration scheduled for April 1, 2025. The event will be hosted by Emmy Award-winning comedian Sheryl Underwood and acclaimed comic David Raibon (known for roles in Snowfall, Insecure, and Ballers).
Titled “Comedy Homecoming,” the event will pay tribute to the rich history of the original Laff House in South Philadelphia while ushering in a new era of comedic talent. Attendees can look forward to performances from a stellar lineup of stand-up comedians, with more names to be announced in the months ahead.
“This new chapter for the Laff House is incredibly meaningful to me,” said Rod Millwood, CEO and founder of the Laff House brand. “It serves as a tribute to my late wife, Mona, who was my partner in life and the driving force behind our dream of building a successful, independent, Black-owned business. Reopening the club on her birthday, alongside the amazing Sheryl Underwood and David Raibon, is a heartfelt way to honor her legacy.”
Sheryl Underwood, who first graced the stage of the original Laff House in 1997 and is incorporating the grand opening into her highly-anticipated Mix & Mingle Tour, shared her enthusiasm: “Rod Millwood is the ideal owner for a comedy club. He is deeply committed to supporting comedians and enriching the stand-up comedy community. I’m so excited that he is honoring his beloved wife Mona by continuing the legacy of the original Laff House Comedy Club in Atlantic City. I’m calling all stand-up comics, family, friends, and fans to join us on April 1 to kick off this grand opening in style!”
Co-host David Raibon added, “As creators of humor, we need to cultivate spaces where African-American comedians and others can perform and hone their craft to support their families. The Laff House Atlantic City Comedy Club is just that kind of venue, and I’m honored to be part of its revival.”
A Comedy Institution with a Rich Legacy:
Founded by Rod Millwood and his late wife Mona Wilkerson in 1997, the original Laff House Comedy Club became a Philadelphia institution, offering a platform for diverse and emerging comedic talent. It was one of the few venues that provided opportunities to comedians based solely on talent, serving as a launchpad for future stars.
Kevin Hart made his stand-up debut at the Laff House in 2006, and other notable alumni, including Bill Burr, Mike Epps, Deon Cole, and Sheryl Underwood, have gone on to achieve global acclaim. The club’s dedication to inclusivity helped shape the careers of countless comedians, establishing it as a cultural cornerstone in the comedy landscape.
The New Laff House in Atlantic City:
The Laff House Atlantic City Comedy Club, powered by Java Monster Coffee & Energy, is located at ACX1 Studios on the Entertainment Pier at Caesars. The 300-seat venue blends modern entertainment with a nod to its illustrious past, featuring a living museum filled with memorabilia from the original club, including photos and promotional materials of its legendary performers.
