The Smithsonian’s National Zoo has welcomed two adorable new residents, Qing Bao and Bao Li, and they’ve already become must-see attractions. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting giant panda bears at the Smithsonian National Zoo.

Meet Qing Bao and Bao Li

Qing Bao, meaning “green treasure,” is a playful female panda born on September 12, 2021. Her companion, Bao Li, whose name translates to “precious strength,” was born a month earlier, on August 4, 2021. Together, they make a dynamic duo, bringing smiles to visitors of all ages.

Both pandas live in the newly renovated Asia Trail exhibit, where you can watch them climb trees, play with bamboo, and lounge in their beautiful habitat. It’s a rare chance to see these black-and-white beauties up close—and the best part? Admission to the National Zoo is completely free.

Why Visit the Giant Pandas in DC?

Giant pandas at the Smithsonian National Zoo aren’t just adorable; they’re a historic symbol of international goodwill between the U.S. and China. Ever since giant pandas were gifted to America in the 1970s, they’ve been beloved by millions of zoo visitors.

Visiting the giant pandas also supports an important cause. The National Zoo is a leader in wildlife conservation and research, housing over 1,500 animals from 300 species, many of which are endangered. And yes, every visit helps support the zoo’s mission of conservation.

Plan Your Visit
