The History of Strawberry Hill Museum
Originally the Cruise-Scroggs family home, this Queen Anne-style mansion showcases intricate Victorian architecture. After housing the family for 32 years, the home took on new life in 1919, during the influenza pandemic. At that time, the Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King acquired the mansion and transformed it into an orphanage for children affected by the epidemic. The orphanage became a cherished part of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church community, providing care until its closure in 1988.
Later that year, the Strawberry Hill Ethnic Cultural Society dedicated itself to preserving the ethnic heritage of the Kansas City area by converting the mansion into the museum we see today. It serves as a living reminder of the region’s Slavic heritage and the diverse nationalities that continue to shape Kansas City.
