A journey through Kansas City’s multicultural stories at Strawberry Hill Museum

Discover the Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural Center in Kansas City, KS

Nestled in the vibrant Kansas City, Kansas, the Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural Center is a captivating destination rich in history and cultural heritage. This stunning Victorian mansion, built in 1887, invites visitors to step into a world of tradition, architecture, and community celebration. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a culture lover, or just looking for a unique experience, this museum has something for everyone.

The History of Strawberry Hill Museum

Originally the Cruise-Scroggs family home, this Queen Anne-style mansion showcases intricate Victorian architecture. After housing the family for 32 years, the home took on new life in 1919, during the influenza pandemic. At that time, the Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King acquired the mansion and transformed it into an orphanage for children affected by the epidemic. The orphanage became a cherished part of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church community, providing care until its closure in 1988.

Later that year, the Strawberry Hill Ethnic Cultural Society dedicated itself to preserving the ethnic heritage of the Kansas City area by converting the mansion into the museum we see today. It serves as a living reminder of the region’s Slavic heritage and the diverse nationalities that continue to shape Kansas City.

What to Expect at the Museum

The Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural Center is more than a historical landmark; it’s a celebration of culture and community. Visitors can explore beautifully restored Victorian rooms, admire exhibits dedicated to the ethnic groups of Kansas City, and enjoy special events like traditional cooking classes, where you can learn to make classic dishes such as pierogi, povitica, and sarma.

Make sure to stop by the Tea Room, where you can relax with refreshments, or browse the online and in-person gift shops for unique finds. If you’re planning a special occasion, the museum also provides rental space for your events, adding a touch of historic charm to your gathering.

Plan Your Visit

Reservations are recommended, particularly for events and the Tea Room. And don’t miss the museum’s event calendar, featuring the Annual 5K, Breakfast with St. Nick, holiday closures, and cultural exhibits like the Don Lipovac showcase.

Become part of a community that values history, heritage, and connection. Book your visit or event today at the Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural Center to experience Kansas City’s diverse cultural tapestry firsthand!
