Nestled in the heart of Missouri’s Ozark countryside lies a hidden gem that captures both the spirit of adventure and the art of winemaking—the Cave Vineyard in Ste. Genevieve. Known as the “cave state,” Missouri boasts numerous subterranean wonders, and this winery takes full advantage of its unique geological features. Owned and operated by the Strussione family, the Cave Vineyard combines the allure of the underground with the rich traditions of viticulture, offering visitors an unforgettable experience.

A Scenic Journey to the Vineyard

The drive to the Cave Vineyard is an experience in itself, winding through picturesque farmlands, rustic barns, and charming antique signs. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a stunning landscape overlooking a tranquil lake, framed by the lush Ozark hills. This idyllic setting sets the stage for a day of exploration and indulgence.

The Charm of Saltpeter Cave

After selecting your wine, cheese, and handmade biscottis—a specialty of the house—begin your short stroll down a winding path. The anticipation builds as you approach the mouth of Saltpeter Cave, a cavern that extends deep underground, waiting to be explored. Inside, the cave is adorned with chairs, tables, and old oak barrels, creating an atmosphere that is both rustic and magical. The gentle sound of a bubbling spring and the cool mist that fills the air add to the cave’s mysterious allure, making it a perfect spot to savor your wine and engage in lively conversation with fellow guests.

A Unique Tasting Experience

The Cave Vineyard offers a curated tasting experience that highlights the best of Missouri’s winemaking. Visitors can enjoy a selection of wines paired with delectable cheeses, crackers, salami, and chocolates. Among the standout offerings are the Venti Anni White, a crisp and fruity blend; the Norton, featuring notes of plum and smoky tobacco; and the Cave Rock Off Dry, a semi-sweet favorite with citrus undertones.

For those with a sweet tooth, the Cave Rock Red and First Time Blush provide delightful options that pair well with chocolate or Havarti cheese. The winery also showcases small-batch spirits like brandy and grappa, expanding the tasting adventure beyond wine.

Know Before You Go

To make the most of your visit, here are some practical tips:

Hours: Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily during April to October, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November to March.

Accessibility: When the weather is dry, a golf cart shuttle is available to assist guests with mobility issues down to the cave.

Picnicking: Bring a picnic to enjoy in the cave, where ample seating is available for up to 100 people.

Why Visit the Cave Vineyard?

The Cave Vineyard is more than just a winery; it’s a destination that captivates all the senses. From the consistently high-quality wines and delicious pairings to the enchanting environment of the cave itself, every aspect of the experience is crafted to delight and inspire. The warm hospitality of the staff ensures that each visit is memorable, with knowledgeable hosts eager to share the history and passion behind their wines.

Whether you’re a wine enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a unique day trip, the Cave Vineyard offers an experience that is truly one of a kind. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this hidden treasure in Missouri’s Ozark hills—your taste buds and sense of adventure will thank you.
