Embark on an enlightening journey at The Griot Museum, a vital cultural landmark in St. Louis celebrating African-American heritage and stories.

Nestled in the heart of St. Louis, The Griot Museum of Black History is a treasure trove of culture, storytelling, and history. Since its founding in 1997, this one-of-a-kind institution has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of African Americans, focusing on those with significant contributions to both the region and the nation.

What Makes The Griot Unique?

The Griot is the first cultural institution in St. Louis entirely dedicated to Black history and is only the second museum of its kind in the country. What sets it apart is its use of life-sized wax figures to bring significant figures in Black history to life—each figure tells a story of resilience, innovation, and impact. From Josephine Baker to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Miles Davis, you’ll be face-to-face with the icons who have shaped history.

Among the museum’s most compelling exhibits is an authentic slave cabin from the Wright-Smith plantation in Missouri. This solemn space provides a visceral understanding of history and serves as a gateway to thought-provoking exploration. Visitors can also “board” a scale model of a slave ship, giving a chilling glimpse into the Transatlantic Slave Trade. These exhibits ground the visitor in the deep historical truths of America’s past.

More Than History

The Griot is not just about preserving the past but also about engaging with the present. Through its rotating national and local exhibits, artist gallery talks, and cultural celebrations, this museum fosters a vibrant community where art, education, and history intersect. For those looking to deepen their experience, you’ll find community education programs and enriching conversations that place history in dialogue with today.

A Name With Power

The name “Griot” pays homage to West African oral tradition. A “griot” is a storyteller, historian, and keeper of culture—roles that this museum embodies by collecting, preserving, and sharing stories of Black communities. The museum’s logo features the Sankofa bird—a symbol that encourages us to look back and learn from the past while moving forward.

Plan Your Visit

If you’re seeking a meaningful cultural experience, make sure to visit The Griot Museum of Black History. It offers a chance to reflect, learn, and connect with stories that continue to shape our world. Don’t leave St. Louis without immersing yourself in the narratives that The Griot so beautifully brings to life.
