Effective Strategies to Prevent Package Theft and Keep Your Holiday Deliveries Safe

Porch Pirates

Online shopping offers an unmatched level of convenience, especially during the holiday season when millions turn to their devices searching for the perfect gifts. Unfortunately, that convenience comes with a growing problem—package theft. A recent report from Security.org revealed that thieves, often referred to as “porch pirates,” stole over $18 billion in mailed merchandise in 2023 alone.

Porch pirates typically target homes with easy access to their entrances, especially if packages are visible and within 25 feet of the street. The good news? A few preventive measures can significantly reduce the chances of your holiday packages disappearing.

Tips to Protect Your Packages

  1. Don’t Leave Deliveries Unattended

If possible, schedule deliveries when you know you’ll be home. If not, ask a trusted neighbor to hold your packages for you. Services like garage delivery from Amazon are another great way to keep packages out of sight.

  1. Ship to a Secure Location

Instead of having items delivered to your doorstep, consider shipping them to your workplace, a store, or a designated pickup point nearby. Renting a post office box is another option that might save you plenty of headaches.

  1. Install a Security Camera

Consider investing in a home security system, such as a video doorbell or outdoor camera. Not only does this deter thieves, but captured footage can also help law enforcement if a package is stolen. Adding a “surveillance” sign can make an even bigger impact.

  1. Require a Signature

For pricier items, opt for delivery services that require a signature. While this solution isn’t perfect for everyone, it ensures packages don’t get left unattended.

  1. Enable Notifications

Most retailers and delivery services offer tracking tools and delivery alerts. Sign up for these notifications via email or app to know exactly when your package lands on your porch.

What to Do If a Package Is Stolen

If you suspect package theft, contact local authorities and file a report. Many delivery companies and retailers have policies or insurance in place to reimburse stolen items, so check with their customer service for next steps.

This holiday season, don’t leave your gifts at risk. By taking these simple precautions, you can ensure your presents make it from the delivery truck to under the tree safely. Protect your packages—and your peace of mind.
