One of the questions I ask myself every day is, “What did you do to help someone along the way?”
With all the blessings we have and the treasurers we’ve stored, there’s no reason to ignore the less fortunate at our doors. Did you pass by a person on the street asking for a small handout or just a treat? Did you frown at someone who was holding a sign because they’re down on their luck—you told them to get away, they suck?
Yes, their clothing was grimy, smelly, and offensive and foul. Maybe they haven’t bathed in a while.
I took a moment to reflect on yesterday before my God-given blessings came my way.
We were poor and raggedy without a home, food stamps, powdered milk and sometimes not even a phone. I forgot the days-gone-by when my mother struggled with six kids in a fatherless home, praying for help to somehow come alone. It was good Christian people at New Light Baptist Church and the Harvey family that came to our rescue; unselfish Angels helping and asking for no pay
Yes, I’m one of the guilty ones that pass needy people every day, forgetting to show my appreciation for yesterday. I’ve promised myself after the month of Ramadan, I’ll never pass another human soul on the streets, begging and panhandling without extending a hand to help my common man. I’m
ashamed of myself for forgetting the lessons of the past and the reason why we’re here today to help someone along the way.
If we do good deeds, show kindness, and keep the faith, maybe we’ll receive the ultimate reward called Paradise for our actions we’ve given by helping our fellow man….Today!!
Be not inhospitable to strangers, lest they be angels in disguise” –Shakespeare
