As temperatures plummet in metro St. Louis, it’s crucial to ensure that those needing a warm place to stay are aware of the resources available. Our Winter Warming Emergency Shelter is now open and will operate through March 7, 2025, providing shelter, hot meals, and support services.

For assistance and entry, clients can call 211. The shelter is located at The Salvation Army, 10740 Page Ave., St. Louis, MO 63132.

In addition, walk-in day services are available at Loaves and Fishes, located at 2055 Concourse Dr., Maryland Heights, MO 63146. This location offers limited services, including emergency shelter referrals, case management assessments, laundry and hygiene access, and meals and telephone access.

The Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services also has a map of warming centers. You can find that here: https://ow.ly/9zFe50Uy4NH

I saw this on MSN from KSDK STL NEWS 5:

The winter storm has officially moved out of the St. Louis region, with numerous winter storm warnings expiring early Monday morning.

IDOT and MODOT are still working to clear area roads, so drivers are encouraged to delay travel or postpone plans on Monday. Road conditions remain hazardous, and with temperatures not expected to rise above freezing until the weekend, improvements will require time and patience.

While the storm didn’t break any records, it left an above-average snowfall total across most of the region.

What are the main reasons why people need shelters during winter storms?

There are several reasons why people might find themselves in need of shelter during winter storms:

  1. Homelessness: Individuals experiencing homelessness often have no place to seek refuge from the cold. Emergency shelters provide a safe and warm environment for these individuals.
  2. Power Outages: Winter storms can lead to power outages, leaving people without heat. Emergency shelters offer a place to stay warm until power is restored.
  3. Financial Hardship: Some people cannot afford to heat their homes adequately due to high energy costs or other financial difficulties. Shelters can be a crucial resource for those in this situation.
  4. Unsafe Housing: People living in poorly insulated or unheated homes may need to seek shelter to stay safe and warm during extreme cold.
  5. Travel Disruptions: Stranded travelers due to road closures or canceled flights might need temporary shelter until they can continue their journey.
  6. Health Issues: Certain medical conditions can be exacerbated by cold weather. Shelters provide a warm environment and access to medical care if needed.

By providing a warm place to stay, meals, and support services, emergency shelters play a vital role in helping vulnerable populations during harsh winter conditions.
