The WNBA season is going well, as there are a number of teams playing at a high level. There are teams that are dominating their opponents, and those teams look like they could have a deep playoff run. The Las Vegas Aces are the reigning champions, and they should not be taken lightly, but they are currently fifth in standings with a record of 6-6. However, they are a few teams with better records, and they could potentially give the champions a run for their money. Here are three contending teams that could win it all this season.
1.) Connecticut Sun
The Connecticut Sun have been a strong team over the years. They have made the playoffs since 2017, and during that time, they have made the WNBA Finals twice. They made the finals in 2019, but lost to the Washington Mystics in a 3-2 series. Connecticut returned to the WNBA Finals in 2022, where they lost to the Las Vegas Aces in a 3-1 series. The Sun went 27-13 last season, and this season, they are off to an incredible start. They are currently 12-1, with their only loss being against the New York Liberty. The Liberty were the team that beat them in the playoffs last season.
Connecticut is playing extremely well this season, and this could be the season where they get their championship. And with Alyssa Thomas (who finished second in MVP voting last season) and DeWanna Bonner leading the way, the Sun are in good hands (as always).
2.) New York Liberty
The New York Liberty are also off to a good start, as they currently have a record of 12-2. Their only losses have been against the Chicago Sky and the Minnesota Lynx. The Liberty are on an eight-game winning streak, and are just as dangerous this season as they were last season. The Liberty finished last season with a 32-8 record. They reached the finals last year, where they lost to the Las Vegas Aces in a 3-1 series. The Liberty did beat the Aces in the Commissioner’s Cup earlier in the season but the Aces got their revenge in the finals.
The Liberty’s trio of reigning MVP, Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones are as strong as ever, and could be a tough team to face in the playoffs. And after reaching the finals last year, they know what it takes to get there once again.
3.) Minnesota Lynx
The Minnesota Lynx have won championships in the past, when WNBA legend Maya Moore was leading the way. The Lynx made the playoffs last year (after missing it the previous season) with a record of 19-21. They were knocked out in the first round. This year, the Lynx currently have a record of 10-3. Their losses were against the Sun, the Aces and the Phoenix Mercury.
The Lynx are led by Napheesa Collier, but they also have Kayla McBride, who is off to a good start this season. Minnesota has been impressive this season, and if they continue to play at this level, they have to be considered a contender.
The WNBA has some talented teams, and while the Aces are going for their third consecutive championship, they may have competition.
