Discover the unconventional journey of Z Truth, from the streets of Chicago to musical success and breaking barriers in the industry.

Lacey “G Souldier” Turner

Zachary Scott Cooper, known in the music world as Z Truth, is not your typical rapper. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Z Truth’s journey to musical success has been marked by resilience, self-discovery, and a commitment to authenticity.

Growing up as a ward of the state, Z Truth faced challenges that many can’t imagine. With no knowledge of his biological family, he spent his formative years navigating the highs and lows of life in group homes. At age 13, Z Truth found clarity while residing in Chicago’s Sullivan House group home.

Amidst the challenges, including residing with ten other boys, he discovered structure and camaraderie. Despite occasional darkness, he thrived, learning valuable life skills like cooking and gaining independence through the home’s program. By 18, he got his first apartment, due to his resilience and adaptability, during his time at Sullivan House.

Graduating from high school and attending Columbia College, he honed his skills and pursued his passions. It wasn’t until 2023 when Z Truth’s music journey took an unexpected turn at a Janet concert. While stepping out to grab cigarettes, he stumbled upon a recording studio and seized the opportunity.

Inspired by the moment, Z Truth and his friend Twin Rossy wasted no time. They penned lyrics, crafted a hook, and laid down a verse, all on the spot. This impromptu session, marked the beginning of Z Truth’s public music career, showcasing his spontaneity and passion for creating music wherever opportunity strikes..

Z Truth’s music is a reflection of his experiences and influences. Inspired by artists like 2Pac, he infuses his tracks with raw emotion and unapologetic honesty.  Z Truth’s song “Queen” featuring Twin Rossy has sparked controversy within the LGBTQ+ community, prompting the rapper to address the misconceptions surrounding its message.

Despite its title, Z Truth clarifies that the song is not aimed at the gay community but rather addresses personal grievances with four or five individuals in his inner circle. He emphasizes his respect for the LGBTQ+ community, being a gay rapper himself, and acknowledges the support received from fans, including heterosexual women who relate to the themes of betrayal and empowerment in the song.

As discussions continue, Z Truth remains appreciative of those who have stood by him and is grateful for the diverse support his music has garnered. Beyond his music, Z Truth is a father, an entrepreneur, and a dedicated member of the community.

Balancing his roles as a cleaning service owner and a Chicago Public Schools employee, he continues to pursue his passion for music, all while remaining grounded in his values and priorities. Looking to the future, Z Truth is focused on leaving a legacy of authenticity and positivity.

With new music on the horizon, including the upcoming single “On Top,” , “On Top,” holds significant meaning. With a blend of old-school vibes and contemporary hip-hop elements, the song stands out showcasing musical versatility. The title, “On Top,” reflects Z Truth’s desire for positivity and enjoyment, capturing his love for feeling good and having fun. Adding to its allure, the track features a sample from Lenny Williams, infusing it with a nostalgic charm

In conclusion, as Z Truth’s journey unfolds, one thing is clear, he is more than just a rapper. He is a success story of the power of perseverance, self-discovery, and the universal language of music.
