The Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development (MDHEWD), along with high schools across the state, are celebrating Decision Day to recognize high school seniors’ postsecondary and career plans. Decision Day is observed statewide on May 1, the date by which many high school seniors are asked to notify a college of their plans to enroll.

This year more than 150 Missouri high schools plan to participate in Decision Day, with activities designed to applaud their seniors and recognize them for taking the next step toward their careers. Decision Day is also a time for schools to assist and support seniors who are undecided on their future and remind younger students of the importance of planning and exploring options.

“Decision Day is an incredibly exciting opportunity for students across Missouri to celebrate their path to future success, whatever that path may be,” said Dr. Bennett Boggs, Commissioner of the Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development. “Some students will seek a postsecondary degree, some may join the military, some may seek out certificates, training or apprenticeship opportunities, and others may immediately enter the workforce. Success is not one-size-fits all, and we are excited to celebrate each student’s commitment to achieving their goals.”

Decision Day was inspired by the NCAA’s National Signing Day when student athletes sign a letter of intent to play college sports. Missouri Decision Day was started in 2016. Students are encouraged to announce their plans via social media using #MODecisionDay. High school seniors who are considering college are also reminded to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and apply for scholarships to maximize their chances of receiving financial aid.Decision Day is one of three Journey to College programs that MDHEWD sponsors to help Missouri students understand their options for the future, secure financial aid, and succeed in their plans.

About the Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development: The department works to empower Missourians with the skills and education needed for success.
