Oscar nominated actor Colman Domingo set to portray Joe Jackson in the highly anticipated Michael biopic, delving into the challenging legacy of the controversial patriarch.

Colman Domingo, a name that has recently echoed through Hollywood with an Oscar nomination under his belt, is set to take on the challenging role of Joe Jackson in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, “Michael.” The Emmy Award-winning actor, known for his stellar performance as civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in “Rustin,” has now stepped into the shoes of the controversial patriarch of the Jackson family.

Joe Jackson, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 89, was a pivotal figure in the world of music. He not only launched the careers of the Jackson 5 but also shaped the solo paths of Michael and Janet Jackson.

However, his legacy is marred by tales of alienation as a manager and reports of abusive behavior as a father, leading his children to distance themselves from him in later years.  Domingo’s portrayal of Joe Jackson promises to dive into the complexities of the character, showcasing the man behind the controversies and the manager who played a crucial role in shaping the iconic careers within the Jackson family.

This role comes on the heels of Domingo’s Oscar nomination, adding more anticipation to his performance.  In a statement, Domingo expressed his excitement about being part of a film that explores both the complicated soul of Michael Jackson and his global impact on music and culture.

He acknowledged the richness and flaws of his character, Joe Jackson, and praised newcomer Jaafar Jackson’s incredible transformation into the role of the King of Pop.  Director Antoine Fuqua, known for his previous work, commended Domingo’s incredible range as an actor, highlighting his ability to deeply inhabit characters and understand their true essence. Producer Graham King echoed similar sentiments, expressing their fortune in having an actor of Domingo’s undeniable talent portraying Joe Jackson.

Scheduled for a worldwide release on April 18, 2025, “Michael” aims to capture Michael Jackson’s triumphs and tragedies on an epic cinematic scale, portraying his human side, personal struggles, and undeniable creative genius. Domingo’s depiction of Joe Jackson is anticipated to bring to life the hard-driving, singularly focused, and controversial patriarch of the Jackson family, offering audiences a nuanced and compelling narrative of the musical dynasty’s history.
