A total of 25 states and territories have reported cases.”
What has been detected is over half of the children had a particular type of adenovirus. Adenoviruses are common viruses that typically trigger mild cold or flu-like symptoms, which can cause illness in people of all ages at any time of year (Adenovirus, 2022). These recent hepatitis infections are not conclusions; they are only data.
Stobbe (May 23, 2022) reported that world health officials remain perplexed by a potential virus causing severe liver damage in hundreds of young children worldwide.” The best available evidence points to a reasonably common stomach bug that isn’t known to cause liver problems in otherwise healthy kids.
There may be co-factors making the adenovirus infections manifest differently. KHN (May 26, 2022) reports, “the total number of cases of the mysterious illness in the U.S. is now 216, including two cases in Utah and nine possible cases in Illinois where all the children concerned, are under 10.”
The unexplained hepatitis cases in children are That 38 states or jurisdictions—including Puerto Rico—have reported cases. The Utah Department of Health identified two Utah children younger than men treated for unexplained hepatitis.
Two children were hospitalized with severe liver disease, and both recovered on May 25. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the sixth death last week. Jay Butler, CDC deputy director for infectious diseases, reports that common exposures or other patterns had been discovered.
Lab tests will continue to find the root cause of the liver inflammation. Johns Hopkins (2022) reports hepatitis as a general term used to describe inflammation of the liver, which several types of viruses can cause. Alcohol, drugs, genetics, and autoimmune disorders can damage the immune systems. The narrative matters.
