Kansas City is buzzing with excitement as the Open Doors! Program officially opens its applications. Formerly known as the Storefront Vacancy Revitalization Program, this initiative is set to breathe new life into downtown by transforming vacant spaces into dynamic pop-up storefronts. With the FIFA World Cup 2026 on the horizon, the program offers a unique opportunity to showcase Kansas City’s entrepreneurial spirit and creative culture to an international audience.

What is the Open Doors! Program?

The Open Doors! Program is a collaborative effort to connect private property owners with small business owners, artists, and organizations. The goal? To create engaging, short-term storefront experiences that not only enhance the city’s neighborhoods but also provide a platform for local talent to shine. By revitalizing vacant spaces, the program aims to foster economic growth, build stronger communities, and leave a lasting impact long after the World Cup festivities conclude.

Who Can Apply?

The program is open to two key groups:

Private Property Owners
Property owners with vacant storefronts in downtown Kansas City, particularly those located in commercial districts and along the streetcar line, are encouraged to apply. This is a chance to collaborate with local entrepreneurs and artists to activate your space during one of the most globally significant events of the decade.

Small Business Owners, Artists, and Organizations
If you’re a small business owner or artist with retail-ready products and a proven sales history, this is your moment. Participants must be prepared to operate a pop-up storefront at least four days a week during the World Cup. This is a golden opportunity to gain international exposure while celebrating Kansas City’s unique identity.

Why It Matters

“Open Doors! will enhance our city’s neighborhoods for the World Cup and long after,” said Councilman Wes Rogers. “By incentivizing our property owners and small businesses to revitalize our storefronts, we will build stronger, safer neighborhoods, and in doing so, we will also increase our tax base.”

The program is being administered by the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City (EDCKC), in partnership with KC BizCare. Both organizations have a track record of successful initiatives, such as the Back to Business program, and are committed to supporting local talent and businesses.

“This program is built for Kansas City makers, artists, and small businesses who are ready to grow,” said Tracey Lewis, President and CEO of EDCKC. “By pairing them with property owners and removing barriers, Open Doors! turns ideas into real storefronts that create jobs and visibility. The goal is simple: give local talent a stage.”

How to Get Involved

Applications for the Open Doors! Program are now open as of October 14, 2025. Interested property owners, small business owners, and artists can visit the program’s website to learn more about eligibility and the application process.

For additional resources to prepare for the World Cup, visit kcmo.gov or email info@kcopendoors.com. Business owners are encouraged to start researching and applying for any necessary permits or licenses now to ensure they’re ready for next year.

A Bright Future for Kansas City

As the city gears up to welcome the world, the Open Doors! Program is a shining example of how collaboration and creativity can transform challenges into opportunities. By revitalizing vacant spaces and showcasing local talent, Kansas City is not only preparing for the World Cup but also building a stronger, more vibrant community for years to come.

Don’t miss your chance to be part of this exciting movement. Apply today and help Kansas City open its doors to the world.
