Explore Dr. King’s Legacy Through Stories and Community at the Missouri History Museum MLK Celebration.

When: Friday, January 17, 2025, 10:00 am –  5:45 pm

Location: 5700 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63112

Cost: Free

Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. throughout the holiday weekend. Families are invited to join us for youth activism workshops, meaningful conversations on race and social justice, storytelling, movement, and craft workshops.

Timed Events For Monday, January 20
Drop-In Make-and-Takes | 10am–4pm | Grand Hall | All Ages
Show your solidarity by designing an article of clothing that shows who and what you care about! Also, think about how your identity fits with others by creating a paper tile to add to our community mosaic.

Step into Story: Activism | 10:30am–11:00am | Lee Auditorium | All Ages

Participate in a large-scale story time with music and children’s books. We’ll explore the meanings of activism and protest, ending with a poignant reading of the “I Have a Dream” speech. American Sign Language interpretation will be provided by DEAF Inc.

Youth Activism Workshop: The Three Strands of Solidarity | 10:30am–11:30am, 11:45am–12:45pm* | AT&T Multipurpose Room | Ages 6–18
Change happens when we work together! Through hands-on activities and thoughtful discussions, join other students, families, and community members to explore historic issues in diverse communities, examine modern social issues and examples of solidarity, and think of ways we can keep working to make a change happen beyond the walls of the museum.

*Note: The 11:45am workshop will feature American Sign Language Interpretation.

Step into the Story: Civil Rights Heroes | 2:00–2:30pm | Lee Auditorium | Ages 5+
Step into the Story will explore children’s books about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and lesser-known or undercelebrated heroes of the 1950s and 1960s Black civil rights movement. You might be surprised by what you learn!

Movement Workshop with Mama Lisa | 2:45–3:15pm, | AT&T Multipurpose Room | Ages 5+

Learn about the legacy of A. Phillip Randolph and his work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—two men who fought for civil and labor rights—through a special workshop that incorporates music, movement, and storytelling.

Ahimsa: A Yoga Practice 4:30pm | Cookies and Community Gathering | 5:00–5:45pm Yoga Class | Grand Hall

Join us for an all-abilities yoga class led by The Collective STL. This annual MLK Day yoga class is inspired by ahimsa, or nonviolence, a central principle of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s beliefs that guided his work for social justice. Please bring your yoga mat, water bottle, friends, and families.

The Collective STL is a yoga and wellness space located in the heart of Old North St. Louis that supports thousands of St. Louisans with mental wellness through culturally aware, trauma-informed programming for healing. The Collective STL’s goal is to create a space where Black people in St. Louis have adequate access to health and wellness spaces, spaces that center their (our) identities and experiences, spaces that are warm and welcoming, and spaces that build community.
