Celebrating the Depot Angels: Volunteers who bring hope and resources to foster families in St. Louis.

If you’re searching for a shining example of selfless service, look no further than the incredible volunteers at Marion’s Angel Depot. Linda Green, Kirsten Koch, and Laura Young, affectionately known as the “Depot Angels,” have dedicated themselves to serving over 100 children in foster care and their families through their work with Angels’ Arms.

A Lifeline for Foster Families

Marion’s Angel Depot, a 4,000-square-foot warehouse, serves as a vital resource for foster families, providing essential items like food, toiletries, hygiene products, laundry detergent, diapers, and more. Opened in March 2021, the Depot was born out of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted the growing needs of foster families. With rising grocery prices, the demand for assistance has only increased, making the Depot’s role more critical than ever.

Recognizing the strain on Angels’ Arms staff, Linda, Kirsten, and Laura stepped in to take over the Depot’s operations. Their dedication and efficiency have ensured that foster families receive the support they need without pulling employees away from other essential tasks.

Recognized for Their Dedication

In recognition of their tireless efforts, the Depot Angels were recently honored with the Jimmy Fidler Service Award by the Crestwood-Sunset Hills Kiwanis Club. This prestigious award celebrates their unwavering commitment to Angels’ Arms foster families.

As Angels’ Arms Founder Bess Wilfong shared, “They are always ready to serve and will do whatever it takes to make life better for our families. They organize, unpack, sort, clean, and set up items for the families—all with a smile and a warm heart. Angels’ Arms would be hard-pressed to find volunteers so completely dedicated to serving our foster families.”

Going Above and Beyond

The Depot Angels’ service extends far beyond stocking shelves. They shop for needed items when donations run low, assist parents with shopping, entertain foster children, and even load cars with supplies. They also make themselves available on weekends for parents who can’t visit during the week.

Their efforts not only provide essential resources but also create a welcoming and supportive environment for foster families. The Depot has become a gathering place where parents can share experiences, exchange advice, and support one another.

A Personal Connection

Each of the Depot Angels has a personal connection to the mission of Angels’ Arms.

Kirsten Koch joined in 2022 after retiring from teaching. As an adopted child herself, she understands the profound impact foster families have on children’s lives.

Laura Young became involved after her husband’s company held a linen drive for Angels’ Arms. Having adopted her youngest son from foster care, she has a deep appreciation for the challenges and triumphs of foster parenting.

Linda Green discovered Angels’ Arms through the National Charity League and found her perfect fit at the Depot after taking time off to care for her parents.

A Day in the Life

A typical day at the Depot begins with sorting donations, stocking shelves, and ensuring items are ready for families. The Angels also keep track of needed supplies and coordinate donation drives.

As Linda explains, “Every foster parent who visits the warehouse is incredibly grateful for the support it provides. They couldn’t be more appreciative of the essentials they receive, and it’s heartwarming to see their excitement over even the simplest necessities.”

One of the most beloved features of the Depot is a special shelf where parents can select a birthday gift for their child during their birthday month—a small gesture that brings immense joy.

The Power of Love and Service

Through their dedication, the Depot Angels embody the spirit of Angels’ Arms, which was founded in 2000 to provide safe, loving homes for foster children. Over the past 23 years, Angels’ Arms has grown to include 15 homes across the St. Louis metropolitan area, serving nearly 100 children annually.

In addition to the children living in Angels’ Arms homes, the organization supports 12 foster families outside of its homes, providing resources for 51 foster children. To date, over 700 children, including 250 sibling groups, have become part of the Angels’ Arms family, experiencing the love and stability they deserve.

Linda, Kirsten, and Laura are more than volunteers—they are a lifeline for foster families. Their compassion, dedication, and tireless service make a profound difference in the lives of every family they touch. They are a testament to the power of love and the impact of serving others.
