Discover the latest news from Detroit’s coffee scene as Rosa Coffee Shop expands to a new location at a luxury riverfront apartment building.

Charity Dean is opening a second location of Detroit Rosa coffee shop this summer.

A Black-owned and women-owned coffee shop is expanding and will open a second location.

Owner Charity Dean announced Rosa Café + Market is scheduled for a summer opening. Rosa Café + Market, a boutique café, coffee shop and market will open at the Residences at Water Square downtown, a 25-story glass luxury apartment building on the former site of Joe Louis Arena.

The café and market will occupy a spot in the lower-level atrium at the recently opened skyscraper that overlooks the Detroit River and Detroit’s RiverWalk.

A rendering of Rosa Cafe + Market expected to open this summer in downtown Detroit.

Plans for the Rose Café + Market space, which will be open to the public, include offering Rosa’s signature house coffee blend amid an array of grab-and-go snacks and ready-to-eat food options. In addition to seating inside, there will be outdoor seating. The space is currently in the build-out phase.

“Our brand is deeply rooted in the community and honing on its authentic Detroit heritage, this new location allows us to continue our legacy while embracing fresh opportunities as a Black business located on the riverfront,” Dean said in a news release.

The Sterling Group, which oversees the Residences at Water, said Rosa Café + Market is a welcome addition.

“Their commitment to excellence aligns perfectly with the lifestyle experience we strive to offer our residents and visitors,” said Danny Samson, the group’s chief development officer, in a news release. “With its enticing market fare and inviting outdoor seating boasting picturesque riverfront views, Rosa Café & Market is poised to become a cherished destination within our vibrant neighborhood.”

Dean, also the president of the Michigan Black Business Alliance, announced that her signature coffee shop, Detroit Rosa on Grand River in Detroit’s Grandmont Rosedale Park, is expanding and now offers cocktails such as mimosas, espresso martinis and Irish coffees.

Open for nearly two years, Dean named Detroit Rosa after her great-grandmother, Rosa Malone. According to Detroit Rosa’s website, Malone was one of the first Black homeowners in Rosedale Park and lived there for nearly 46 years.

At Detroit Rosa, the coffee is from Black-owned Faust Haus, located in Detroit’s Eastern Market. Faust Haus, according to its website, got its start at the family’s home on Faust Street in Detroit. The coffee roasting company specializes in coffee from across the African diaspora, specifically from Ethiopia.

The signature coffee at Detroit Rosa is its Rosa Blend coffee, a specially curated Ethiopian Sakiso blend with hints of strawberry and roses. It’s available for purchase by the bag.

Rosa Café + Market is now hiring for the new location. Its Rosedale Park location is at 19810 Grand River Ave. For information on Detroit Rosa, visit detroitrosa.com.
