Explore African heritage through art at Deep Roots: African Aesthetic Response to the Banjo, opening at The Griot Museum.

The Griot Museum of Black History invites you to an evening of art, culture, and reflection at the opening reception of Deep Roots: African Aesthetic Response to the Banjo. This thought-provoking exhibition, which debuted on October 19, delves into the profound symbolism of the banjo as a bridge between African heritage and American culture.

Curated by the renowned artist Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, Deep Roots examines the banjo not just as a musical instrument, but as a cultural artifact that embodies Africa’s enduring influence on American identity. Abdul-Musawwir, whose work has graced galleries across the United States, Asia, and Africa, challenges viewers to reflect on the significance of creative objects from the past. Through his art, he poses compelling questions: Why do we cherish these artifacts? How do they reflect our purpose and contributions to humanity? And how do visual languages shape our understanding of the world?

The exhibition promises to be a rich tapestry of visual storytelling, inviting attendees to explore the intersections of history, art, and identity. It will remain on view until December 13, 2025, offering ample opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in this cultural dialogue.
