Your Ultimate Guide to Experiencing the St. Louis Gateway Arch

Missouri, FEB 23 2023 – Interior view of the overlook bridge of The Gateway Arch

Fun facts

The Gateway Arch stands 630 feet tall, making it the tallest monument in the United States.

Its unique design was created by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, who won a design contest in 1947.

The Arch symbolizes America’s westward expansion and St. Louis’s role as the Gateway to the West.

It’s made of stainless steel and was completed in 1965 after overcoming major engineering challenges.

Visitors can take a tram ride to the top for stunning views of St. Louis and the Mississippi River.

Beneath the Arch lies the Museum at Gateway Arch National Park, featuring interactive exhibits on over 200 years of history.

The Arch’s foundations extend 60 feet underground to ensure stability.

Towering 630 feet above downtown St. Louis, the Gateway Arch is a testament to America’s pioneering spirit and a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and travelers alike. But while its striking design is the star attraction, there’s a treasure trove of stories and experiences waiting to be discovered inside and beneath the Arch.

The Museum at the Gateway Arch

At the heart of your visit lies the Museum at Gateway Arch National Park. This free, world-class museum showcases over 200 years of St. Louis’s rich history through six interactive galleries. Designed with Universal Design principles, the museum offers accessible artifacts and tactile features, ensuring a welcoming experience for all visitors. You’ll wander through fascinating exhibits that tell the story of St. Louis and its role in America’s westward expansion.

Jefferson’s Vision and Manifest Destiny

Start your exploration at the Jefferson’s Vision Gallery to uncover the pivotal moments that shaped the West. Step into the world of Thomas Jefferson and see how Lewis and Clark’s epic expedition began in St. Louis. From natural discoveries to daring adventures, this gallery highlights the people who played vital roles in mapping uncharted territories. Transition to the Manifest Destiny Gallery to explore the exchanges, conflicts, and ambitions between Spanish explorers, Indigenous Peoples, and American settlers as the nation expanded.

The Riverfront Era and New Frontiers

Transport yourself back to a time when St. Louis was the heart of river commerce. The Riverfront Era Gallery brings the bustling Mississippi port city to life with a model replica of the 1852 levee, archaeological remains, and sensory experiences. Move forward to the New Frontiers Gallery, where you can witness St. Louis’s transformation into a manufacturing powerhouse. This exhibit captures the rise of railroads, industrialization, and the city’s role in the nation’s growth.

Building the Gateway Arch

No visit would be complete without learning about the story behind the monument itself. The Building the Arch Gallery dives into the design contest that gave us Eero Saarinen’s visionary masterpiece. Explore the runner-up designs, the engineering challenges, and the lasting legacy of this iconic structure.

Plan Your Visit

A trip to the Gateway Arch is more than just admiring its magnificent structure—it’s a deep dive into the stories, cultures, and history that have shaped not only St. Louis but also the United States.
