Join UAPO in celebrating Marcus Garvey’s enduring legacy with cultural tributes, resistance updates, and community empowerment.

The Universal African Peoples Organization (UAPO) proudly presents its 36th year of honoring the life, legacy, and revolutionary spirit of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. This year’s celebration, taking place on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at 4 PM at the Legacy Bar & Grill in St. Louis, Missouri, promises to be a powerful gathering of education, culture, and community action.
A Tribute to Marcus Garvey
The event will feature an African Drum Salute, a symbolic and spiritual homage to Marcus Garvey’s enduring impact on the global African diaspora. Moderated by UAPO President General Zaki Baruti, the program will delve into Garvey’s life, his vision of Pan-Africanism, and his call for Black empowerment and self-determination.
Highlights of the event include:
Tracy Reese presenting Garvey: A Brief History, offering insights into the life and work of the man who inspired millions with his message of unity and pride.
V.P. Safiyah Chauvin spotlighting the contributions of Amy Ashwood Garvey and Amy Jacques Garvey, two remarkable women who played pivotal roles in advancing Garvey’s mission.
Dr. Chef Felicia Ann Hill, also known as Dr. Chef, discussing Garvey’s Posthumous Pardon, a significant step in recognizing and rectifying historical injustices.
Black Resistance Update
In the spirit of Garvey’s fight against oppression, the event will also feature a segment on Black resistance, addressing contemporary struggles and strategies for liberation:
Kwame Sankara will speak on Resistance Against Fascism, shedding light on the ongoing fight for justice and equality.
Amari Sneferu will provide an African Report focusing on Burkina Faso and the Sahel region, highlighting the resilience and resistance of African nations.
Aha Sa Djedu will tackle the critical issue of Gerrymandering and Voter Suppression, emphasizing the importance of protecting voting rights in the face of systemic challenges.
Cultural Presentations
The celebration will also include cultural expressions that honor the rich heritage of the African diaspora:
Dr. Coffee Wright will share a powerful poem, capturing the essence of Garvey’s vision and the enduring spirit of resistance.

Community Outreach
In addition to celebrating Garvey’s legacy, the UAPO is committed to giving back to the community. Attendees are encouraged to bring school supplies for Walbridge Elementary, supporting local students as they prepare for the upcoming school year. Imani Gwen Cogshell will lead the UAPO Community Outreach segment, highlighting the organization’s ongoing efforts to uplift and empower the community.
