Celebrating caregivers and raising dementia awareness through film and community engagement.

The Mama Joe Project, a St. Louis–based initiative dedicated to caregivers, brain health, and elder support, is celebrating a milestone. On Sunday, October 5, 2025, the project will host a special community event at the 24:1 Cinema in Pagedale to mark its first anniversary.
The highlight of the celebration is the screening of My Mama Joe, Hope & Help, a documentary that follows the caregiving journey of JoeAnna “Mama Joe” Caldwell, a beloved community leader diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia. Mama Joe’s personal story is blended with expert commentary from national organizations including the CDC, AARP, Baylor College of Medicine, and the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers. The film sheds light on the early signs of dementia, culturally competent care practices, and the importance of mental wellness within families and communities..
The program begins at 2:00 p.m. when doors open for vendor exhibits and community resource tables, providing attendees with practical information on health and elder care. The film will be shown at 3:00 p.m., followed by a one-hour Q&A session with subject matter experts, giving participants the opportunity to engage in dialogue about caregiving and dementia-related challenges. The event concludes with a reception from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Carter Commons Lounge, where refreshments will be served and community networking encouraged.
Admission is free, and the event is open to the public with advance RSVP encouraged at mamajoeproject.com. All attendees will receive a caregiver resource guide and access to local health service vendors.
The celebration is made possible through partnerships with Betty Jean Kerr People’s Health Centers (BJKPHC) and The Links, Incorporated – St. Louis Chapter. Dr. Ronald Griffin, CEO of PHC, emphasized the importance of community education as part of the organization’s mission, while Dottie McDowell, president of The Links, highlighted the commitment to health equity and service.
As the Mama Joe Project moves into its second year, it continues to spotlight the resilience of caregivers while addressing pressing issues surrounding dementia care. Through film, education, and collaboration, the project seeks to bring both hope and practical help to families across the region.
