Gateway Cup: When St. Louis’s Neighborhoods Become a Racetrack

Every year as summer winds down, the Gateway Cup turns some of St. Louis’s most walkable neighborhood streets into a closed-circuit professional cycling course — and this year is no exception. The multi-day criterium series brings top amateur and professional cyclists to the city for tight, fast-paced laps through neighborhood streets, with the women’s and men’s professional races serving as the weekend’s marquee events.

What makes a criterium different

Unlike a road race that covers long, point-to-point distances, a criterium is run on a short closed loop — often under a mile — with riders completing dozens of laps at high speed. The format makes for a spectator-friendly race: instead of catching a glimpse of riders once, you can watch them pass by every couple of minutes, tight cornering and all.

The Gateway Cup spans several neighborhoods over its run, with daylong programming that includes:

  • Kids’ races and amateur categories earlier in the day
  • Progressively higher-level categories building toward the professional fields
  • The women’s and men’s professional races as the day’s centerpiece

More than a race day

The Gateway Cup has become as much a neighborhood block party as a cycling event. Local restaurants and bars along the course lean into race weekend, and residents often set up their own viewing spots along the barricades. It’s a rare chance to watch elite-level competition without leaving the city, let alone buying a ticket to a stadium.

If you’re going

Course closures mean some streets will be inaccessible to vehicle traffic for the day, so plan routes around the barricaded loop in advance. Arrive early to grab a spot along a corner, where the tactical racing tends to be most visible, and expect a full day of programming if you want to catch everything from the youth races to the pro finish.

For a city with deep cycling roots, the Gateway Cup is a reminder that some of the best sports action in St. Louis doesn’t require a ticket — just a good spot on the sidewalk.
