Critics question Israel policy, political contributions and Democratic leadership as party prepares to take control of Congress.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — An online petition opposing Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries becoming the next Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives has attracted more than 425,000 verified signatures, highlighting divisions within the Democratic Party following its November 3 midterm victories.
The Change.org petition, launched in September by Nicole Whitted, calls for a competitive leadership election rather than automatically elevating Jeffries to the speakership.
Titled “House Democrats: Choose a New Speaker,” the campaign argues that congressional leadership should reflect Democratic voters’ priorities rather than those of the party establishment.
Among the concerns raised by Jeffries’ critics is his longstanding support for Israel, including continued American military assistance despite growing opposition to Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Jeffries’ relationship with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which has endorsed him and whose affiliated political action committee has supported his campaigns, has also drawn criticism from progressive Democrats seeking greater restrictions on military assistance to Israel.
Healthcare policy represents another area of disagreement. Some progressive critics question whether Democratic leadership has been sufficiently aggressive in defending Medicaid and resisting Republican budget negotiations.
However, Jeffries has publicly opposed Medicaid reductions and, in his November 4 announcement seeking the speakership, specifically called for reversing those cuts.
Questions have also emerged about the party’s electoral direction.
The election-tracking website SpectrumVote lists 11 candidates endorsed by Jeffries during the 2026 cycle. Critics have questioned the effectiveness of establishment endorsements while pointing to victories by progressive candidates as evidence of changing voter priorities.
The claim that only one or two of Jeffries’ endorsed candidates succeeded, however, has not been independently substantiated. The party’s broader electoral success included candidates representing different ideological wings.
Some progressive lawmakers have expressed reservations about supporting Jeffries, citing concerns over representation, policy priorities, and the need for stronger opposition to the Trump administration.
Jeffries, meanwhile, has emphasized Democratic unity, affordability, healthcare protections, and government accountability.
Following the Democratic midterm victory, he formally announced his candidacy for Speaker on November 4.
The petition does not endorse an alternative candidate but encourages other Democrats to seek the leadership position.
Change.org identifies Whitted as a compensated Change Ambassador and labels the petition a paid partnership.
The incoming 120th Congress will elect its Speaker when it convenes January 3, 2027.
