America faces an extraordinary test of its democratic character. As the November midterms approach, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a Somali-born Muslim and naturalized American citizen, has become the focus of renewed allegations about her immigration history. Such claims demand evidence, due process and impartial scrutiny—not political theater. When an administration publicly vilifies an opponent while its justice system examines her, Americans have every reason to question whether law enforcement is being weaponized.
And what a convenient distraction. Families struggle with groceries, fuel, healthcare and housing. War involving Iran unsettles global energy markets. Gaza remains a landscape of immense Palestinian suffering, while the Russia–Ukraine war tests alliances and American credibility. The promises of cheaper living, peace and competent government deserve scrutiny. Instead, the outrage machine asks voters to obsess over Omar.
The cruelty is not incidental. Political rhetoric increasingly targets Black women, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, with insults rather than arguments. Somali Americans and Muslims are cast as outsiders, while partisan television, Truth Social personalities and online accounts recycle suspicion as though repetition were proof. Describing human beings as animals or infestations recalls a grim technique of propaganda. Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels helped normalize imagery that depicted Jews as vermin. The comparison is a warning about dehumanizing language, not a claim that today’s circumstances are identical. As the warning commonly attributed to Voltaire puts it: ‘Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.’
The anti-immigrant economic narrative also collapses under examination. The American Immigration Council estimated that immigrant households in Minnesota paid about $4.4 billion in taxes and held $11.2 billion in spending power in 2018. Somali Minnesotans contribute through businesses, healthcare, transportation and community institutions. Fraud, wherever proven, should be prosecuted individually. An entire community cannot be tried by association.
Then consider the hypocrisy. Melania Trump immigrated from Slovenia and received an EB-1 visa, the category popularly called an ‘Einstein visa.’ Marco Rubio is the son of Cuban immigrants; Ted Cruz was born in Canada to an American mother and Cuban-born father. Their family histories are not disqualifications. Neither is Omar’s. Why is immigrant success celebrated in some families but treated as suspicious when embodied by a Black Muslim congresswoman?
For those invoking Christianity to justify hostility, Matthew 25:35 records Jesus saying, ‘I was a stranger, and ye took me in.’ Refugee admission and naturalization are legal American pathways. Omar followed that journey, from civil war in Somalia and a Kenyan refugee camp to elected office in Minnesota. One can challenge her votes or rhetoric without denying her dignity—or the legitimacy of the voters who elected her.
And to those who thunder about ‘OUR country’: what the hell do you mean by ‘our’? Indigenous nations were here before European colonization; enslaved Africans helped build this republic without choosing to come. Immigrants have since served, sacrificed and died in American wars. During World War I, more than 18 percent of U.S. Army soldiers were foreign-born. The September 11 attacks killed people from more than 90 countries. Patriotism has never belonged exclusively to one ancestry, religion or political faction.
This is not an argument against border rules or accountability. It is an argument against using a person’s origin or faith as a political indictment. Americans deserve facts about immigration policy, transparent investigations, and measurable progress on affordability and foreign policy—not a permanent campaign of enemies and scapegoats. A party expecting victory at the polls must still earn public trust; an administration fearing defeat must still respect the law.
Omar’s rise from refugee to member of Congress is precisely the perseverance once celebrated as the American Dream. She is not above investigation, but neither is she beneath constitutional protection. The question is whether America will defend equal citizenship and independent justice—or reward a cult of personality that mistakes bullying for leadership. History will remember the answer.
