This should be an interesting race, between two of St. Louis’ most powerful and influential leaders. I am looking for the polls to explode on this race, to unseat Cori Bush, by current St. Louis County’s Top Prosecutor, Wesley Bell.
Here is the story:
St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell announced Monday that he will be ending his campaign for U.S. Senate and instead will be challenging Rep. Cori Bush in the 2024 Democratic primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District. Bell cited the need for “steady and effective leadership” in Washington as his reason for switching races.
The move will put two prominent figures from the Ferguson unrest in 2014 against each other in the primary. Both Bell and Bush played key roles during the protests, with Bell being elected to the Ferguson city council in 2015 and Bush being an activist and leader of the protests. In his statement, Bell said that he had been urged by fellow Democrats to switch races, saying “we need you in Washington, but St. Louis needs you in the House of Representatives.”
The 1st Congressional District, which includes all of St. Louis and parts of north St. Louis County, is solidly Democratic and has not been represented by a Republican in over 50 years. Bell’s decision to withdraw from the U.S. Senate race comes amid discussions in political circles, but his actual move to challenge Bush was not predicted.
Rumors of a challenge to Bush, a member of the progressive group known as “The Squad”, began circulating earlier this year over questions about her campaign management. In April, ethics complaints were filed after Bush continued to employ her husband as a security specialist after they were married in February. One of the complaints was recently dismissed by the Office of Congressional Ethics.
The primary election for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District will take place in August 2024. The winner will likely face little Republican opposition in the heavily Democratic district.
I wish them both well, we need consistent and caring leaders in these top positions. But we shall see how it all plays out in 2024.
