The St. Louis Job Corps Center recently hosted its inaugural Men’s Day, a bold initiative dedicated to empowering adolescent males—particularly those from challenging backgrounds enrolled in the center’s free, government-funded career program.
The event featured dynamic speakers and committed male mentors who shared personal stories, offered practical guidance, and delivered hands-on lessons in essential life skills such as grooming, hygiene, and professional dress. Through engaging workshops, participants learned to tie a tie, present themselves with confidence, and conduct themselves respectfully in public, equipping them to face life’s challenges with resilience and purpose.
The day’s highlight was an unforgettable, day-long presentation by Victorious Hall, founder of Never Stop Learning Consulting. Hall was specially invited to inspire both Job Corps students and staff, and he delivered with passion and purpose. His dynamic sessions were tailored to the unique needs of the Job Corps environment: he spoke directly to the challenges and opportunities facing young men at the center, sharing his own journey of resilience and growth.
Another highlight was the appearance of Bobby Bostic and references to Judge Evelyn Baker, both born and raised in St. Louis. Their story is one of transformation and redemption. At age 16, Bostic was sentenced by Baker to 241 years in prison for a series of armed robberies—one of the harshest penalties ever given to a juvenile for non-homicide offenses in Missouri.
Initially, Baker justified the sentence by citing Bostic’s lack of remorse and the severity of his crimes. Years later, as public attitudes and laws regarding juvenile sentencing evolved, Baker began to reconsider her decision, recognizing that Bostic’s courtroom demeanor was more “adolescent bravado” than true remorselessness.
This realization sparked a process of reconciliation between Baker and Bostic, united by their shared St. Louis roots. Baker publicly expressed regret and became one of Bostic’s most passionate advocates, joining over a hundred current and former legal professionals in pushing for his freedom. Their collective efforts helped drive legislative change in Missouri, ultimately allowing parole review for youth offenders. In 2022, Bostic was granted parole and released, transforming a story of harsh justice into one of redemption.
During Men’s Day, Bostic spoke candidly about his life experiences and the lessons he learned through adversity. He urged students to take full advantage of the opportunities Job Corps provides, emphasizing the value of education, mentorship, and making positive choices.
Bostic’s message delivered a powerful testament to the possibility of growth, second chances, and the lifelong impact of supportive role models. He underscored the event’s central message: with determination and guidance, young men can overcome even the greatest obstacles and build brighter futures.
