Facts About Valentine
Valentine’s Day, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14th. It originated as a Christian feast day honoring a martyr named Valentine and through later folk traditions, it has also become a significant cultural, religious and commercial celebration of romance and love in many regions of the world. During his time he would marry soldiers to their mates in secret, and when it was found out about his efforts. He was then placed in prison for his act of love. Saint Valentine was martyred on February 14th. The Feast of Saint Valentine, also known as Saint Valentine’s Day, was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 to be celebrated.
In the Eastern Orthodox Church, he is recognised on July 6; in addition, the Eastern Orthodox Church observes the feast of Hieromartyr Valentine, Bishop of Interamna. On July 30, 1969 the Catholic Church removed his name from the General Roman Calendar, leaving his liturgical celebration to local calendars, though use of the pre 1970 liturgical calendar is also authorised under the conditions indicated in the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum of 2007.
