JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — State Rep. Emily Weber, D-Kansas City, has filed two pro-choice bills ahead of the 2024 Legislative Session, set to start Wednesday, Jan. 3.
The “Respect People’s Abortion Decisions Act,” House Bill 2038, would protect the right to an abortion prior to fetal viability or when the pregnancy presents a risk to the parent’s life or health. Weber has filed this bill in each of the four years she has served as a state representative since she was elected in 2020.
“My constituents care deeply about restoring abortion rights in Missouri, and that sentiment has only grown more urgent after the Dobbs decision,” Weber said. “While getting these bills heard in a General Assembly dominated by anti-choice Republicans is all but impossible, Missourians deserve to know that there are elected officials in this state who will fight for their right and ability to make their own medical decisions.”
Weber’s other pro-choice bill, House Bill 2045, would require crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) in Missouri to provide medically accurate information regarding reproductive health options in order to receive state funding. Currently, these organizations do not need to provide medically factual information in order to be eligible for state funds.
A 2019 study in the Journal for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology found that CPCs often work solely to dissuade people who visit these centers from abortion by using misinformation and failing to adhere to medical and ethical practice standards.
“Missouri should not give taxpayer dollars to people who give inaccurate or incomplete medical advice,” Weber said.
