Despite her decades in the spotlight, Campbell revealed that stand-up comedy is a newer venture—one she stepped into during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m new to stand-up,” she shared. “I was too scared to do it, and during COVID I said I’m gonna do everything that I ever wanted to do.”
That leap of faith turned into a defining moment when she was invited by DJ D-Nice to host a comedy night at the Kennedy Center. What started as a 15-minute set in front of major celebrities quickly became the spark that ignited her stand-up career.
“I did my thing,” she said. “There was an agent in the crowd—and I’ve been on the road ever since.”
Why St. Louis?
For Campbell, this stop isn’t just another city—it’s a long-overdue return.
“Because I haven’t been in St. Louis since the ’90s,” she explained. “I have a lot of friends from here. I went around the country a little bit before I got here because I wanted to give y’all in St. Louis a great show.”

“No,” she said. “Me, Martin, and Tichina Arnold were having lunch one day, and Martin said, ‘Can you believe people call us icons?’ We were just trying to feed our families and make each other laugh.”
Decades later, the show remains a cornerstone of Black television and comedy—proof that authenticity and chemistry can create timeless magic.

Her memoir, The A Word, launched alongside a book tour beginning in April 2026, offering fans an even deeper look into her life and journey. She also appeared in Operation: Aunties, which premiered in 2025 on ALLBLK, further proving her versatility across platforms.
