Black twin sisters reclaim their ancestral heritage by acquiring a historic plantation, highlighting the importance of African American land ownership.
Twin sisters Jo and Joy Banner have embarked on a profound journey to reclaim their family’s legacy while championing environmental justice by acquiring the historic Woodland Plantation in LaPlace, Louisiana. This plantation holds profound significance as it was once the site where their ancestors were enslaved and played a pivotal role in the 1811 Slave Revolt—an event etched deeply into American history.
Raised on the banks of the Mississippi River in Louisiana, the Banner sisters were steeped in the oral history of their family’s resilience and the courageous acts of those who fought for freedom during the 1811 revolt. Motivated by these ancestral stories, Jo and Joy Banner were determined to take action.
After years of dialogue with the previous owner, Timothy Sheehan, the sisters finalized the purchase of Woodland Plantation for $750,000 in January 2023. This acquisition not only honors their familial ties but also thwarts plans for a new industrial facility, safeguarding the environment and health of local communities.
Founders of The Descendants Project, Jo and Joy envision Woodland Plantation as more than just a piece of history—it’s a place for community engagement, genealogical research, and discussions on environmental justice. Their initiative seeks to shield the Black communities in Louisiana’s River Parishes from the harmful effects of industrial pollution, such as those posed by projects like the proposed Greenfield Louisiana LLC plant.
The Banner sisters have emerged as vocal advocates against environmental degradation, stressing the imperative of preserving their community’s heritage amidst ongoing challenges. Through Woodland Plantation, Jo and Joy aim to create a nurturing environment where individuals can reconnect with their roots, dive into their ancestry, and actively participate in vital conversations surrounding environmental sustainability.
Their efforts underscore a profound commitment to honoring the past while shaping a more equitable and sustainable future. By transforming Woodland Plantation into a cultural hub and bastion of environmental activism, Jo and Joy Banner are forging a path towards healing, empowerment, and lasting change for generations to come.
