Jun 1 to June 8 mark the first official Kansas City Hip Hop Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Kansas City is in the midst of its first-ever Hip-Hop Week, a celebration of the city’s contributions to the genre.
The occasion is even officially recognized by the Mayor.
Although hip-hop didn’t get its start in Kansas City, the city still has its fingerprints on today’s music.
“Tech Nine being the mogul that he is, so they can be independent artists and still make it to Forbes magazine, and still be known in Germany anywhere in the world you go,” Geneva Olds, the event’s founder, told KMBC 9 on Wednesday.
Olds explained that the motivation for the week was simple.
“There’s so much talent in the city, and it should be recognized,” she said.
Olds further expressed her vision for Kansas City.
“I feel like we’re in the middle of the map. People fly over us all the time, going to L.A., New York, Atlanta. I want everybody to come here and meet right in the middle,” she said.”I feel like we’re in the middle of the map. People fly over us all the time, going to L.A., New York, Atlanta. I want everybody to come here and meet right in the middle,” she said.
Recently, the week was recognized as an official week with a proclamation from Mayor Quinton Lucas.
Olds expressed her gratitude for the recognition.
“I was really, really happy and just honored to be able to create something, honored that they trust that this is something that could go on and be a safe and fun environment for the community,” she said.
To continue the festivities, a Ladies of KC Hip-Hop showcase is scheduled for tonight at 8 p.m.
A complete list of events for the week can be found on the official Kansas City Hip Hop Week website.
