State Rep. Emily Weber denounces the Union Station Shooting, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence and calling for action to ensure public safety in the United States.
Weber statement on Union Station shooting
“After taking a few days to process what happened to me, my constituents and my community, my heart breaks for Kansas City. I was among those rushed into a bathroom in Union Station as first responders worked to control the situation. While everything was happening, I saw so many people, so many Kansas Citians, reach out to help those in need even amidst the chaos and fear.
I know that this tragedy will be a stain on our city for some time, but this event does not define the spirit of our city or its people. The kindness, the care, the empathy. That’s who we really are. I have never felt more honored and humbled to represent the 24th District in the state Capitol.
“But to experience this day of horror as it happened in my own district only reaffirms my belief that Missouri needs common sense gun safety laws more than ever. Missouri’s lax gun laws turned what was supposed to be a day of triumph into a day of tragedy.
This issue sadly isn’t new; the shooting just made it more visible. Last year, Kansas City shamefully set a new record for gun deaths, and Missouri ranked as high as fourth in gun deaths in the nation in 2020. We have solutions to these problems, but they’re routinely ignored. I have offered bills this session and in the past that would require owners to report lost or stolen firearms.
However, the majority in the state legislature refuses to pass laws that will keep Missourians safe from irresponsible gun owners, and they refuse to allow municipalities to write their own ordinances that would keep Missourians safe.
“The people of Missouri are kind-hearted, welcoming, hard-working people. We deserve better than to live our lives in fear of the specter of gun violence hanging over their heads every second of every day.”
