Kansas City is becoming a key player in the fast-growing tech sector. But maintaining this momentum requires more than innovation and determination. It needs a coalition that continually advocates for the industry’s growth and serves as a catalyst for success. Enter the KC Tech Council, an independent nonprofit membership organization dedicated to strengthening and promoting Kansas City as the tech hub of the Midwest.

Here’s a closer look at why the KC Tech Council exists, what it does, and how its initiatives are shaping the region’s tech future.

Why We Exist

The tech industry in Kansas City is booming, but sustaining this progress requires a unified approach. That’s where the KC Tech Council fills the gap. By fostering collaboration among industry leaders, the council creates an evolving coalition dedicated to driving the local tech sector forward. Their mission is simple yet impactful—to ensure Kansas City remains a competitive force in the tech industry while empowering the next generation of innovation.

What We Do

At the core of the KC Tech Council’s mission are three strategic pillars that guide its efforts and define its purpose.

Industry Access

The tech workforce in Kansas City is substantial, with one in every 10 workers employed in the sector—that’s over 100,000 professionals. The KC Tech Council provides these individuals with unique opportunities to connect, collaborate, and grow through professionally enriching programs and events. Events like The CEO Retreat, Access Granted, and the Executive Roundtable Series bring together thought leaders and decision-makers to discuss challenges and opportunities. Their “Byte by Byte” podcast further extends these conversations, enabling accessible industry insights for the broader community.

Through these initiatives, KCTC helps foster an environment where professionals can thrive, creating a united community that drives innovation.

Workforce Development

No successful tech hub can exist without a robust and dynamic talent pipeline, and Kansas City is no exception. The region saw more than 24,000 tech job postings in 2022, highlighting the urgent demand for skilled professionals. Recognizing this, the KC Tech Council develops both short- and long-term solutions to address the tech talent gap.

A standout example of these efforts is the tech apprenticeship program launched in 2021. Focused on expanding and diversifying the talent pool, the program is a vital step in ensuring the industry has the workforce it needs to grow. By promoting inclusion and skill building, the KC Tech Council is shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for tech professionals in Kansas City.

Policy Advocacy

Legislative policies have a profound impact on the tech industry’s trajectory. Whether enabling growth or creating barriers, laws and regulations can shape the future of businesses and workers alike. The KC Tech Council understands the importance of advocacy, which is why its Policy Committee works to ensure that Kansas City’s tech industry has a united voice before its elected officials.

By actively monitoring, championing, and opposing emerging policies, the KC Tech Council ensures the industry’s best interests are always at the forefront. They also keep their members informed, empowering companies to prioritize legislative issues that matter most.

Building the Future of Tech in Kansas City

Through its focus on industry access, workforce development, and policy advocacy, the KC Tech Council is more than an organization; it’s a beacon for Kansas City’s tech industry. By fostering collaboration, addressing talent shortages, and shaping effective legislative policies, the council is laying the groundwork for long-term growth and innovation.

Together, with its member companies and industry leaders, the KC Tech Council remains committed to making Kansas City the ultimate tech destination in the Midwest. With their leadership, the future of tech in Kansas City looks brighter than ever.
