(East St. Louis, IL) – With the recent rules of banning creative literature historically weaved into American History as well as literary courses throughout classrooms nationwide, Midwest Regional Director of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated (DST), Brittani N. Blackwell has created this year’s Midwest Impact Day of Service to highlight the banned books and promote literacy to youth. On Saturday, September 30, from 1-3:30p.m. at the East St. Louis Public Library and Cahokia Public Library, the women of the East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter (ESLAC) will provide those banned books to children in the community with The Library Project: Seeing Black in REaD.

Midwest Impact Day of Service, which began in 2019, is a way to bring together the 125 collegiate and alumnae chapters, which make up the Midwest Region, for a collective cause. Each chapter will come up with a special way to recognize this year’s campaign, highlighting banned books. ESLAC will not only provide books for youth to take home but there will be reading time for children and teens, book giveaways and more. Olympic medalists, Dawn Harper Nelson and Jackie Joyner-Kersee as well as other local celebrities are slated to attend to participate in the reading huddles. All teachers and administrators are encouraged to come as there will be a special reception dedicated to them. All emerging and aspiring writers are welcome to join and meet local authors willing and ready to help them launch their next project.
