Maya Moore had an incredible career, and as she enjoys retirement, her team continues to honor her. On Monday, the Minnesota Lynx announced they are retiring Moore’s jersey.
The jersey retirement ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 24th, and The Lynx will be playing the Indiana Fever. The Fever are a hot topic in the WNBA, as they have the first pick of the 2024 draft. Caitlin Clark of the Iowa Hawkeyes is expected to be the draft’s first pick. Clark has also stated that Moore was the player she idolized growing up. Moore recently surprised Clark before her final regular season game. It was a special moment, showing the impact Moore has had on the younger generations.
Moore accomplished a lot in her career before retiring at 33. She was the first pick in the 2011 draft. She was a strong player in college (as she led her team to two national championships), and her success carried over into the WNBA. She became a four-time WNBA champion, a WNBA MVP in 2014, a six-time WNBA All-Star, and more. Her first championship was during her rookie year. That in itself is an impressive accolade.
Moore went on to win her other championships in 2013, 2015 and 2017. She later wrote a piece for The Players’ Tribune and announced that she would miss the 2019 WNBA season to focus on family and her ministry dreams. The following season, Moore decided to miss another season to focus on criminal justice reform. In 2023, Moore announced her retirement.
Moore impacted not only the Lynx but the WNBA in general. Retiring her jersey (she wore No. 23) is a great way to honor her and show appreciation for what she has done on and off the court. Moore was a special player, and this night will add to her legacy.
