Retail theft arrests made
The holiday shopping season is proving to be challenging for brick-and-mortar stores as a rash of retail thefts continues. On Monday, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office announced five arrests in connection with three separate retail thefts in the past week. In one instance, three people were jailed after allegedly stealing nearly $1,500 worth of merchandise from a Macy’s in Oak Brook. According to police, the suspects allegedly put the merchandise in an occupied baby stroller and attempted to leave the store without paying for the items.
Jury continues Burke deliberations
Jury deliberations resume Tuesday in the corruption trial of former Chicago Alderman Ed Burke. Burke faces racketeering, extortion, and bribery charges. Prosecutors said Burke was trying to intimidate businesses for personal gain. Defense attorneys say he never demanded anything in exchange for an official act and never received money. The judge in the case said if the jury is still deliberating on Friday, they will be sent home until after New Year.
East St. Louis buried in bills
The city of East St. Louis is facing a severe financial crisis that could result in layoffs, payless paydays, and a reduction in services. The mayor and city council recently held a special meeting to try to resolve the financial situation. According to Fox2 news, the city failed to keep up with payments to the East St. Louis police and firefighters pension fund. Now the city is on the hook for more than $7 million in past-due payments.
