MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – State lawmakers gathered Wednesday at the Wisconsin State Capitol to hold a public hearing on missing and murdered African American women and girls.

The hearing was on new legislation that would create a task force on missing and murdered African American women in Wisconsin. Senators like LaTonya Johnson (D-Milwaukee) said they can’t afford to look away when these tragedies happen.

“This taskforce is not just about unearthing more statistics, it’s actually about saving human lives,” said Sen. LaTonya Johnson. “It is about honoring the memory of those who lost their lives, bringing those home who are missing, and protecting those at risk.”

State Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) added the bill is necessary to help prevent, investigate and heal from all forms of gender-based violence in the state.

“This bill means that much to me,” said Rep. Stubbs. “Such a passionate bill that I want to bring home every victim that’s across our state, give closure to every family. This is a really difficult time with so many families in the state.”
