HBCU student Rajah Caruth is breaking barriers in the world of auto racing as NASCAR’s youngest black driver, making history and inspiring diversity and representation in the sport.

In the high-speed world of NASCAR, where the roar of engines and the screech of tires dominate the landscape, one young trailblazer is defying the odds. Meet Rajah Caruth, the youngest of only four African American drivers in NASCAR, currently balancing his budding professional racing career with his studies at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), a historically black university (HBCU) in North Carolina.
At just 21 years old, Caruth’s journey into the world of NASCAR began in 2014 when he attended his first race—a dream sparked by the Pixar movie Cars when he was only four. Undeterred by obstacles such as his age, location, and lack of connections in the racing world, Caruth honed his skills using racing simulators, transitioning from virtual racing to the real track.
The path from simulation to reality was not without challenges. Juggling high school studies, a summer job, and competitive eSports racing, Caruth faced a learning curve when he first got behind the wheel of a manual car.
It took nearly a year to overcome those initial hurdles, but he considers his background in sim racing a unique advantage that sets him apart. Caruth’s breakthrough came when he caught the eye of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Development program through the eNASCAR Ignite Series.
Making his real-world racing debut in 2019 at the Bojangles’ Southern Shootout race, he finished his rookie year with two Top 10 placements. In 2023, Caruth reached new heights, securing a 16th place finish in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and making history as one of the first Black drivers for Hendrick Motorsports.
The Wendell Scott Foundation sponsored his 2023 season, marking another milestone for this promising young driver.
Despite his burgeoning success on the track, Caruth remains committed to his education. Currently enrolled at WSSU, he is majoring in Motorsport Management, recognizing the importance of understanding the business side of racing for his future beyond driving. Caruth is determined to give back to the sport and make a positive impact, striving to represent diversity within NASCAR.
“I want to be the best racer that I can be but also pay my dues and leave the sport better than it was when I first arrived on the scene, for those who do and don’t look like me alike,” Caruth remarked. Spire Motorsports, the team currently supporting Caruth, expressed their confidence in his abilities, stating, “Rajah Caruth is an exceptional young man. He’s a very talented driver with a bright future.
Caruth’s resilience and determination serve as an inspiration, not only to aspiring racers but to the broader NASCAR community, proving that talent knows no boundaries and that diversity is a driving force for positive change in the sport.
As he continues to chase his dreams both on and off the track, Rajah Caruth is undeniably a rising star worth watching in the world of NASCAR.
