Fans of the late great Bob Marley are excited about the musical drama ‘Bob Marley: One Love.’ from Paramount Pictures, which is slated for a Valentine’s Day Release. Meanwhile, here is our first feature for the Black History Month kick-off.

Who was Bob Marley?

Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in Nine Mile, Jamaica. He grew up in a rural village with his mother, Cedella Booker, and his father, Norval Marley. Marley’s father was a white British naval officer, and his mother was a black Jamaican woman.

Race

Marley’s mixed racial background was often a source of discrimination and struggle in his early life. At a young age, Marley showed a love for music and was influenced by Rastafarian beliefs and culture.

Musical journey

In the late 1950s, Marley and his childhood friend, Bunny Wailer, started a band called The Wailers. They were later joined by Peter Tosh, and together they rose to fame and became one of the most influential reggae bands in history.

Marley’s music was deeply rooted in social and political issues, and he used his music as a tool to spread messages of unity, love, and equality. His songs often reflected the struggles of the poor and oppressed, and he became a symbol of hope and rebellion for many.

Gaining worldwide recognition

In the 1970s, Marley and The Wailers gained international recognition and were signed to Island Records. They released albums such as Natty Dread and Exodus, which became popular for their blend of reggae, rock, and soul music.

Marley’s lyrics largely focused on social and political issues, including the struggles of the oppressed and the Rastafarian movement. His message spread throughout the world, making him a cultural and musical icon. Bob Marley’s influence on reggae music and activism continues to resonate today.

Cancer death

In conclusion, Bob Marley died on May 11, 1981, at the age of 36, from complications of acral lentiginous melanoma, a rare form of skin cancer that was initially found on his toe. Despite seeking treatment, the cancer spread throughout his body and he eventually succumbed to it.
