Davis celebrates a win in his last contracted fight with Mayweather Promotions over Rollie Romero at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
(Brooklyn, NY)
Gervonta “Tank” Davis has established himself as a star who can sell tickets regardless of where his fights are staged. Tank has fought in San Antonio, Atlanta, his hometown of Baltimore, the Los Angeles area and last night he made a return to Brooklyn.
Mayweather Promotions has built his career to a point to where he can sell out arenas around the country regardless of opponent. As a result,Tank’s fights are now pretty much exclusively on Pay Per View, even if they are not pay per view opponents that he’s being put in against.
Moreover, critics of Tank and the way he’s being promoted would say that he is forcing fans to pay for fights that are not worthy of pay per view. And that his career is being wasted by not fighting any of the top fighters in his weight class.
At 135 pounds there are a group of four fighters that were dubbed the four kings. Tank himself is one himself, as is Ryan Garcia, Teofimo Lopez, and Devin Haney.
Garcia is younger than Tank but also hasn’t faced top tier opponents either, yet he has a huge social media following and is moving in the direction of being the next Golden Boy of boxing. An association with Canelo Alvarez and boxing’s original Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t hurt.
Devin Haney is the WBC champion at 135 and is headed for a showdown for the Undisputed Title in Australia against George Kambosos on ESPN. Kambosos an Australian will be defending the titles he took from Teofimo Lopez.
Lopez who is recovering from injuries; dealing with other health issues. So if he comes back to boxing it will probably be at 140 pounds.
The other looming possible opponent for Tank is Vasyl Lomachenko who fans know as “Loma” who was the champion at 135 pounds and was widely regarded as the number one pound for pound fighter before taking a loss to Teofimo Lopez during the heart of the pandemic.
Loma has since racked up a couple of impressive wins over solid opponents at 135 and put himself into position for big fights at 135 once again.
Tank who just fought his last fight on his Mayweather Promotions contract is pondering free agency and wants more control over his career. So does that mean he will leave Mayweather and signs with Matchroom, or Top Rank?
Or does he go fight to fight with whomever can land him his next big fight? The same way that Canelo Alvarez has after a long association with Golden Boy Promotions and a short promotional deal with Matchroom.
Ryan Garcia was ringside in Brooklyn for the fight against Romero. While Garcia is the least accomplished of the “four kings”.
He has the most crossover appeal, and with his good looks, charm, and huge social media following. Therefore, a fight between he and Tank Davis could be one of the biggest fights in boxing despite neither fighter holding a major title.
Garcia has a pending fight date of July 16th, but no opponent has been named yet. Garcia challenged Tank to fight after Garcia takes care of his still unnamed opponent on July 16th.
The big question now is will Tank actually take control over his career and start taking bigger challenges. Will he be able to secure a date with Ryan Garcia?
Will his full potential finally be realized by winning championships. And unifying divisions as opposed to fighting sub-par opponents to keep the gravy train going?
Only time will tell, with full control Tank Davis can change the narrative and reshape his legacy.
