Winter season is here and we are in the month of January. Yesterday the Weatherman gave a forecast of very low temperatures for the next few days including snow flurries and high windchills. If you are from the Mid-South you know what that means. Slick icy roads, dressed in warm layers of clothing if you’ve gotta go outside, and good home cooked food to go along with a delicious beverage. Well I decided to take this time out to make some delicious and tasty cocktails that will be great to take advantage of while indoors.
The beverage that came to mind first was an Old Fashioned. I love the zesty orange flavor and bitters that go into this cocktail, but I wonder what it be like if it was differently. So I got to thinking about it more and more, and began to search for different styles and flavors for an Old Fashioned. Came across a few different Old Fashioned recipes. Fifteen to be exact. Here’s the list of them that I’ve found.

1. Almond old fashioned (bourbon or tequila base)
2. American trilogy old fashioned
3. Anejo old fashioned
4. Benton’s old fashioned
5. Brandy old fashioned
6. Call me old fashioned
7. Dante’s old fashioned
8. Gin old fashioned
9. Irish old fashioned
10. Gingerbread tequila old fashioned
11. Islay old fashioned
12. Madurised old fashioned
13. Maple old fashioned
14. Rum old fashioned
15. Old fashioned tea
When I saw number 15, I immediately thought to myself Old Fashioned tea. Sounds warming, delicious, refreshing and just a different twist to the recipe. Well let’s get into! Now this cocktail was created by Mixologist Eric Ribeiro.
Here are the ingredients as listed for Ribeiro’s
Old Fashioned Tea
• 1.25 oz. Talisker 10 Year Old (Scotch Whiskey)
• 0.25 oz. Earl Grey Tea Syrup
• 1 cup Water
• 1 cup Sugar
• 2 Earl Grey Tea Bags
• 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
• 1 dash Orange Bitters
Let’s go through the steps. Combine water, sugar and Earl Grey tea bags into a saucepan.
Bring to a simmer and allow the tea to steep for 5 minutes. Then add the Talisker 10 Year Old, Earl Grey Tea syrup, Angostura Bitters and Orange bitters into your shaker with ice. Give your shaker about 30 count shake, place your strainer on top of your shaker. Strain contents into a rocks glass over fresh ice, and garnish with a lemon twist. Then you’re all done ready to enjoy. January’s cocktail of the month the Old Fashioned Tea.
