Dr. Jayfus Doswell, Ph.D.

Complaints about over-policing in Black and Brown’s Neighborhoods have been at the forefront of review among citizens and lawmakers for decades. However, the recent death of Tyre Nichols and other instances of police brutality throughout the county have inspired Dr. Jayfus Doswell, Ph.D. founder and owner of Juxtopia®) in Baltimore, MD.

Dr. Doswell decided to create a technology that could reduce the risks of police using lethal force, particularly on Black Men. Jayfus was recently awarded a grant to see how effective his technology will be.

Dr. Doswell’s company Juxtopia®) was established in 2001 and is a biomedical and information technology (BIO-IT) company in Baltimore, MD. The company specializes in the development of human-performance products.

Their patent-pending technologies are designed to integrate continuously into your daily human health, learning, and physical performance. The NIH grant is titled: “Artificial Intelligent Augment Reality Police E-Trainer for Culturally Competent De-Escalation and Non-Lethal Force Training to Eradicate Police Violence Against Black Males.”

Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive experience which connects real world and computer-generated content in real-time interaction.

Dr. Doswell cites the “objective of the proposed NIH SBIR Phase I research and development (R&D) effort is to address the public health disparity of police violence and murders against Black males by investigating improved police training with his patent Juxtopia®) CAMMRAD. His prototype CAMMRAD will evaluate Baltimore police in a controlled class learning stage.

Dr. Doswell cites that “physical and psychological violence structurally mediated by systems of law enforcement, which results in deaths, injuries, trauma, and stress that disproportionately affect Blacks in the U.S.” Edward et al. (2019) state that American. Black men face ~1 in 1,000 chances of being killed by police over their lifetime. Latino men have a ~1 in 1,900 events.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) revealed, in an extensive report, that African Americans were targeted by Baltimore police suggesting a conspiracy against Black citizens. Dr. Doswell believes his research will show some of the effects of implicit biases on this observed behavior. Measuring the impact of implicit bias reduction interventions among law enforcement officers can have a positive social impact across the country.

Dr. Jayfus Doswell earned a Master’s in Systems and Computer Science from Howard University in 1998 and a Ph.D. Degree in information technology from George Mason University in 2005. His dissertation: Building the virtual instructor: An Architecture for Developing Pedagogical Embodied Conversational Agents for Mixed Reality Environments. Specifically, “Juxtopia® CAMMRAD Police is an artificial intelligent (AI) enabled wearable augmented reality (AR) e-training & e-evaluation system, built upon the Juxtopia® augmented reality (AR) hardware/software platform.
