WELCOME TO THE LEGACY INSTITUTE

Mentorship is extremely important, now more than ever. In 2020, an already existing educational achievement gap grew even bigger when global pandemic COVID-19 forced schools to close their doors. This placed the responsibility of education on parents.

Unfortunately, a lot of parents struggled with everyday needs with their children, work schedules and being effective home educators. During this time, parents have faced difficulty teaching their students virtually due to lack of time, educational knowledge and resources. This program is designed to assist parents by providing opportunities for their children to learn more about their history, school subjects and other important life lessons they would not ordinarily learn in school.

There are three ultimate goals of this program. First, we will help participants build a greater sense of self, self-worth and understanding of their history and culture. Second, participants will be paired with mentors and gain exposure to a variety of career and occupation opportunities. Third, we will share different pathways to make college accessible to our program participants. In an attempt to close the racial, academic and wealth gap, Legacy Institute will serve as an intellectual think tank for youth to teach, encourage and mentor them so they are able to break generational curses and achieve an unsurmountable amount of success. This program will serve as a mentorship and a scholarship program.

Mission

Legacy Institute’s mission is to leave a L.E.G.A.C.Y behind for minority children to pass down to future generations and build upon the efforts of advancing the African American community in various facets of life including but not limited to education, property, trade, finance, writing and overall personal development and mentorship. We strive to share invaluable information that our youth will need as they navigate through life and into adulthood in subjects that aren’t usually included in schools’ curriculum. We purposely aim to educate our students on subjects that they wouldn’t learn in school to increase exposure and help level the playing field as they matriculate through life. As program participants navigate their way through Legacy Institute, we hope to see an increase in eagerness to learn and a decrease and/or overall avoidance of problem/high-risk behavior. By putting successful mentors in program participants’ lives, they will have a human roadmap to help them achieve their goals and to reach their full potential.
