In Southern Illinois, a transformative opportunity is unfolding for individuals eager to kickstart a career in the construction industry. The Construction Trades Training Program at Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) is a game-changer, offering a concise yet comprehensive 10-week curriculum that opens doors to lucrative opportunities. This program, designed to prepare participants for trade union apprenticeship programs or entry-level positions, boasts an impressive array of offerings. From hands-on training in the operation of hand and power tools to in-depth lessons in construction math, solar installation, welding, and blueprint reading, participants gain a multifaceted skill set.
Moreover, successful completion not only earns 14 college credit hours but also awards the coveted Building Trades Safety Certificate approved by the Illinois Community College Board. And one of the program’s unique features is the provision of industry certifications in crucial areas like OSHA Safety, First Aid, Aerial/Scissor Lift, and Forklift Safety. Financial support, in the form of an $11.00 per hour stipend, further sweetens the deal for enrolled participants. Â
Soon, the next round of classes, scheduled to commence in late January 2024, offers a gateway to a promising career. With additional classes slated for summer and fall of 2024, the Lansdowne UP facility serves as the primary training ground. However, participants can expect diverse experiences with sessions at the Belleville Campus, Union Halls, and other facilities. Furthermore, prospective participants, aged 18 and above, holding a high school diploma or equivalency, possessing a driver’s license (or the ability to obtain one), and residing in Illinois, are invited to seize this opportunity.Â
