Learn about founder Stefan West and his mission to support Black-owned businesses through the Black Wall St Challenge at SLT Argus News.”
Stefan West, a proud native of St. Louis, Missouri, is not just the owner of STL Mobile Notary Service; he is a man on a mission. Born and raised in the Walnut Park community, Stefan is making waves as the Co-Founder of the BlackWallstChallenge, a movement that highlights and supports black businesses across the United States.
The catalyst for the BlackWallstChallenge was a pivotal moment in Stefan’s life during the aftermath of the tragic death of Mike Brown in St. Louis. Frustrated by media portrayals that labeled black individuals as mere looters, Stefan decided to turn the narrative around. He envisioned a positive use of the internet to promote a mindset shift in how black people engage with and support each other’s businesses. Rejecting a religious approach, Stefan focused on economic empowerment.
He observed a lack of sit-down black-owned restaurants in his hometown’s Walnut Park community, sparking his determination to promote and represent black businesses. Borrowing the Black Wall Street name, Stefan embarked on a journey to spotlight black-owned enterprises. His initial focus on black banks expanded to encompass black businesses nationwide, and soon he found himself traveling from city to city, connecting with local entrepreneurs.
The response was overwhelming, with people enthusiastically sharing recommendations for businesses to feature. Stefan’s philosophy is simple but powerful: “When we support black businesses in our local community, that creates more opportunities and jobs to create more black businesses.”
He emphasizes the positive impact on infrastructure, schools, and property values. Despite lacking a college education, Stefan considers being honored that he is mentioned alongside influential figures like Dr. Boyce Watkins and Dr. Claud Anderson as his greatest accomplishment. His advice for those who’ve had negative experiences with black businesses is to afford them the same chances and patience extended to larger corporations.
Currently gearing up for the 8th Annual “29 Days of Showing Love,” a unique Black Business Challenge coinciding with Black History Month, Stefan continues to inspire change.
Collaborating with the St. Louis Argus on Black Business profiles, he envisions a legacy of a family man who was passionate about every endeavor. In Stefan West, the Walnut Park community has found a champion, and his impact is resonating far beyond the streets of St. Louis.
