Repost from The Narrative Matters
With school nearing its end of the year and the summer just starting to heat up, it makes sense to scout out some entertainment. We have all avoided the theaters for the past year or so, but with the world opening back up, there is no better time than now to catch some flicks. We have put together a list of some of the most exciting movies to look forward to this summer that also feature Black leads. There are new movies in the theater and on various streaming services that are being released every month. If you are looking to stay on top of the trends and in the know, make sure to add these titles to your watch list.
Black Adam – July 2022
DC Comics does not often disappoint when it comes to its feature films. It should come as no surprise that they are releasing yet another blockbuster for the summer season. This action fantasy film follows the Black Adam and his journey to unleash justice in modern times. As a superhero who was given unique gifts by the gods of Egypt more than 5,000 years ago, he was imprisoned not long after receiving his powers. The visuals are extravagant, the storyline highly evolved, and of course, the heroes, are spectacular. Aldis Hodge plays Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell plays Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan is Doctor Fate with The Rock rounding out the cast as Black Adam. This story ark will tie into Shazzam and other DC comic story arcs.
Nope – July 2022
When it comes to science fiction and horror, you don’t often see many black leads. However, Nope is set to deliver in terms of a creative storyline and a stunning cast. This Universal Pictures production is directed by Jordan Peele and stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Michael Wincott, Brandon Pere, and Steven Yeun. The movie is set in California where the residents of the area witness something eerie and complex. This expansive horror film features a modern twist that will keep you at the edge of your seat for the entire film. The classic sounds of the Black country culture melt away into a chilling event that will leave you questioning everything you know about miracles and what it means to be knee-deep in the unknown.
Beast – August 2022
Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley, and Iyana Halley take a break from modern life and heat out to the Savanna. Instead of being a relaxing trip that includes bonding with nature, the family is instead hunted. Idris and his teen daughters much outwit a giant lion that has gone rogue and is intent on making them a meal. Idris has been giving us stunning characters for years, and this role makes no exception. This survival thriller will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
The Woman King- September 2022
Kevin Hart has been making his mark on the comic circuit for decades, but in recent years he has also become quite the actor. He is putting his skills to use to bring you joy and laughs this summer. Kevin will act as the lead alongside Ronnie Rowe, Melanie Liburd, and Jasmine Mathews. This action-comedy is set in New York where an assassin and a screw-up are mistaken for each other. Their comedy sets off at an Airbnb rental.
Gatlopp – June 2022
Did you love watching Jumanji as a kid? Perhaps you even enjoyed the reboot that came out a couple of years ago? Well, if so, then you will love Gatlopp. This is an adult spin on a similar game, only, instead of trying to escape from a jungle, the goal is to resolve the past. Four friends well into adulthood finally come together after one finalizes their divorce. Instead of just getting drunk and celebrating their freedom, they decide to play a game they found in the basement. The story forces the characters to confront their past, both good and bad in order to win the game. If they fail to complete the game before sunrise, they will be stuck forever. This is a nice mix of fantasy, humor and of course, horror all placed in an adult package. Jim Mahoney, Shelley Hennig, John Ales, Sarunas J. Jackson, and Emmy Raver-Lampman are all featured in this movie and help bring the story to life.
