Get insights on attending a gospel concert from industry experts in the gospel music industry, including tips from the concert organizer and media staff.
I was assigned to cover the “Legends Tour Live” gospel event, featuring Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker, Fred Hammond, and Anthony Brown at Friendly Temple, and decided to approach it from “The Fundamentals of…” perspective. I spoke with several people involved with the concert and got their thoughts on the do’s and don’ts of attending a gospel concert and although they had differing thoughts, the most common agreement reminded concertgoers to come ready to enjoy, praise, and worship.
Check out “The Fundamentals of Attending a Gospel Concert” from the perspectives of the gospel hall of fame co-founders, media staff, facilities manager, and a host– plus my tips.

- Arrive on Time: Aim to arrive at the concert venue before the scheduled start time to find your seat without disrupting the performance.
- Dress Appropriately: Dress modestly and respectfully, considering the atmosphere of the concert and any specific dress code requirements. Avoid overly casual or revealing attire.
- Respectful Behavior: Maintain quiet and respectful behavior during the concert. Avoid talking loudly, using your phone, or engaging in disruptive behavior that may distract performers or other attendees.
- Participation: Feel free to participate in the concert by clapping or singing along if appropriate. However, be mindful of the volume of your voice and avoid overpowering the performers or those around you.
- Seating Courtesy: Be considerate of others when finding your seat and moving around the venue. Allow others to pass without blocking aisles or disrupting their view of the stage.
- Photography and Recording: Follow any guidelines provided by the concert venue regarding photography and recording. Respect the performers’ rights and refrain from taking unauthorized photos or recordings during the concert.
- Respect Personal Space: Respect the personal space of those around you and avoid invading their space or touching them without permission, especially during moments of prayer or reflection.
- Applause: Show appreciation for the performers by applauding at appropriate times, such as after songs or performances. Avoid interrupting the music with applause unless prompted by the performers.
- Refrain from Criticism: Avoid making negative comments or criticism about the performers or the music during the concert. Instead, focus on enjoying the experience and showing appreciation for the talent and effort of the performers.
- Follow Venue Rules: Familiarize yourself with any specific rules or guidelines provided by the concert venue, such as restrictions on food or drinks, smoking areas, or prohibited items.
By following these etiquette guidelines, you can contribute to a respectful and enjoyable experience for yourself and others attending a gospel concert. I’ll be back soon with another “The Fundamentals of…”
